Are you ready for the new Right to Rent rules?
Landlords and agents will soon need to navigate increasingly bureaucratic Right to Rent rules when temporary Covid-adjusted measures come to an end on Friday (30th September).
Trade association Propertymark warns that a combination of factors means it won’t be a straight return from video checks to in-person checks; landlords will need to meet different requirements depending on the status of their prospective tenant.
Face-to-face checks now resume for British and Irish citizens, replacing video calls. Checks can be completed digitally, but landlords and agents will need to sign up to a UK government-certified and paid-for digital identity service provider (IDSP).
Overseas nationals
Checks on overseas nationals will have to be made either via the Home Office’s real-time and free-to-access system using a digital share code and date of birth provided by the tenant or using an IDSP. For EU citizens without settled or pre-settled status, the list of ID eligible for checks has been slimmed down because they must be processed as overseas nationals.
